Design Basics: Color Theory

Okay, this is super basic stuff guys, but it bears repeating.  

So let's dive into the wonderful world of color!

The primary colors (blue, yellow and red) are unmixable.
You need to start with these colors.

Secondary colors (green, violet and orange) are
made by mixing primary colors.
blue+yellow=green
yellow+red=orange
red+blue=violet

Tertiary colors are created by mixing a secondary
color and one of its adjacent primary colors.
yellow+green=yellow green
yellow+orange=yellow orange
red+orange=red orange
red+violet=red violet
blue+violet=blue violet
blue+green+blue green

Complementary colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel.
A color looks its brightest when it's placed next to its complement.
yellow & violet, yellow orange & blue violet, orange & blue (War Eagle!),
red orange & blue green, red & green, red violet & yellow green

Analogous colors are colors that are
adjacent to each other on the color wheel.

Color temperature refers to the visual heat or chill of a color.

A hue is a pure color.
hue+black=shade
hue+white=tint
